Fire Door Certifications: EN 1634, UL 10C and Local Codes

EN 1634, UL 10C and regional schemes decoded — which certificate your market accepts and what paperwork must travel with the doors.

A fire door is only as exportable as its paperwork. The same physical door can clear customs in one market and be rejected in another, purely on which test regime the certificate cites. Importers who understand the three main families of certification avoid the most expensive kind of surprise — the one at the port.

The Three Certification Families

  • EN 1634-1 (Europe and most export markets) — furnace testing of the complete doorset; results expressed as E (integrity) and EI (integrity + insulation) in minutes: 30/60/90/120
  • UL 10C (North America) — positive-pressure fire testing with hose-stream impact; ratings in minutes (20/45/60/90) under UL's listing and labelling scheme
  • Regional schemes — Gulf civil defence approvals, and national marks across SE and Central Asia, which typically accept or build on EN results

Why the Regimes Are Not Interchangeable

EN and UL differ in furnace pressure, test assembly and pass criteria, so minutes do not transfer between them. A 90-minute EN door is not automatically a 90-minute UL door. Specify the regime your destination code names, and confirm the manufacturer holds that exact certificate — not an “equivalent” claim.

  • The hardware schedule — closers, seals and locks covered by the test
  • Factory production control / quality certification (ISO 9001)
  • Destination-market approvals your customs and civil defence will request
