In hotels, hospitals and apartment buildings, many openings must satisfy two inspectors at once: the fire officer, who cares about minutes of integrity, and the security auditor, who cares about forced-entry resistance. Two Tests, One Construction

Fire performance (EN 1634) and burglar resistance (EN 1627 / GB 17565) are separate test regimes with different protocols. A dual-rated door is one construction that has passed both — which is an engineering achievement, because fire design favours intumescent seals and sacrificial layers while security design favours mass, bolts and rigidity. Only the test certificates prove the combination works.

Where Dual Rating Is Effectively Mandatory

• Hotel perimeter, back-of-house and service entrances on escape routes
• Hospital ward entries, pharmacies and records rooms inside fire compartments
• Apartment entrance doors — fire-rated by code, security-rated by residents' expectations
• Server rooms, plant rooms and any secure room whose walls are fire compartment lines

Specification Pitfalls to Avoid

• Two certificates from two different constructions — both must cover the same tested doorset
• Security hardware swapped onto a fire door after certification — this voids the fire rating
• A rated leaf in an unrated frame — the doorset is the certified unit
• Missing the closer and intumescent seals from the order — they are part of the tested set
